Chiefs' Larry Johnson benched for Sunday's Jets bout
Coach Herm Edwards benched Chiefs running back Larry Johnson for Sunday's game against the Jets after conducting an internal investigation on the troubled running back.
The NFL and Kansas City police are investigating a report that Johnson spat numerous times on a woman at a Kansas City nightclub. The former Penn State running back is also scheduled for a December hearing for a simple assault allegation involving another woman in February at another club. The incident marks the fourth time in five years that Johnson has been accused of assaulting a woman.
Johnson apologized Wednesday and said he is "disgusted" with himself and where his career is heading. This is the second straight game Johnson will miss for violating team rules.
Edwards said it was his decision to bench Johnson for the Jets game. The player could face further punishment from the NFL. "I can't speak any further on the legal issues other than to say the truth will come to the light," Johnson said Wednesday. "And I promise not only to the fans, not only to teammates, players, coaches, GMs and my own family that I do anticipate seeking help to get better as far as getting my life on track."
Edwards will also be without his top two QBs after placing Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard on injured reserve. Tyler Thigpen will start.
